Eric Davis Potter, 66 of 101 Sunridge Dr., Rome, GA, died  March 17, 2000 at his residence.  Mr. Potter was born on  January 1, 1934  in Hartford, NC, son of the late James  McConnell Potter and Crystal Davis Potter.  

 

Upon graduation from Duke University in 1955, he was commissioned as an Ensign in the U.S. Navy and served on the USS Rich for 3 years.

 

After his tour of duty with the Navy, he went to work for First Union Bank in Birmingham, AL and from there to First Federal Savings and Loan Association in Raleigh, NC.  This was followed by his association with Citizens Savings and Loan Association of Rocky Mount, NC as Vice President and Treasurer.  In 1968 he joined Home Federal Savings and Loan Association in Macon, GA as Vice President and Treasurer, and in 1982 moved to Atlanta as a vice president with Georgia Federal Savings and Loan.  He and his wife retired to Rome in April, 1999.  He was a member of First United Methodist Church of  Rome.

 

Survivors include his wife, Ruth Lukens Potter; sons, Lee Churchman Potter, Woodstock, and James Stuart Potter, Grayson; one daughter, Elizabeth Potter Knees, Ft. Collins, CO; grandchildren, Michelle Starr Knees and Benjamin Davis Knees, Fr. Collins, and two brothers, Jack Potter, Venice, FL and Bob Potter, Raleigh, NC.

 

A memorial service will be held on Sunday, March 26 at 3:00 pm at the First United Methodist Church, Rome, GA. with the Rev. Mark Sargent officiating.  The family will receive friends at the church from 2:00 until 3:00 pm Sunday.

 

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to:  The American Cancer Society, The Nature Conservancy, Community Hospice Care of Rome, GA, the Professional Association of Georgia Educators Scholarship Fund or the Night Shelter of Druid Hills Presbyterian Church of Atlanta.
