Mr. Fletcher Warner Russ Jr., 50, of Hickory died Sunday,  February 14, 1999, in Emporia, Virginia

Born September 24, 1948, in Key West, Florida, he was the husband of Mrs. Judy Shumate    Russ, who survives, and the son of Mr. Fletcher Grady Russ and Mrs. Cecile Carrigan Russ, who both  survive. He was employed by Life of Virginia Insurance Co., where he was Hickory office manager.

He was a U.S. Navy veteran and was a yeoman third class serving from 1966 to 1969, serving on  the USS Topeaka (CLG 8), and the USS Rich (DD 820). He was a graduate  of the University of Georgia. He  was a member of Mount Olive Lutheran Church, where he was a longtime member of the Men’s  Bible Class, a former Sunday school teacher, and he served as a member on the church council  and usher, Church volleyball team and as youth league basketball coach.

Survivors other than his wife of the home and parents of  Burlington include a son, Mr. Mathew Russ of Newton; a daughter, Ms. Holly Russ of the home; two stepsons, Mr. Rick Jenkins of Granite Falls and Mr. Greg Jenkins of Raleigh; two brothers, Mr. John Russ of Chesapeake, Va., and Mr. Adrian Russ of Denver; two sisters, Ms. Ruth Roberts of  Mohawk, N.Y., and Ms. Teresa Christopher of Highland Lake, N.Y.; and a grandchild.

The funeral was conducted at Mount Olive Lutheran Church by the Rev. Thomas Colley. Burial was in the Shumate Family Cemetery in North Wilksboro, NC.

Memorials may be made to Mount Olive Lutheran Church, 2780 N. Center St., Hickory, N.C. 28601.  Bass-Smith Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
